This month’s craft group is all about quilting. Ooh how I love a handmade quilt!
So what is a quilt?
Basically, a quilt is made up of three layers: top, bottom and wadding in the middle. Most often, the top is pieced, which allows for a lot of creativity and colour.
Look at this gorgeous quilt by Red Pepper Quilts – too lovely!
But you don’t need to go all out and buy lots of expensive, fancy fabrics. This quilt by A Cuppa And A Catch-up uses old shirts – a fantastic way to upcycle old textiles:
Quilt design is an art form. Traditional designs look wonderful in more contemporary colour schemes, like this take on a half-triangle quilt by Cluck Cluck Sew:
Modern quilt designs are just as lovely, and can have quite a dramatic effect. I just love the chevrons in this baby quilt by You Had Me At Bonjour:
And isn’t this quilt from the Modern Quilt Guild just amazing?
So what’s happening at craft group?
Obviously quilts take a lot of time to make, and we won’t get anywhere near any of the above examples at craft group! But we’re going to show you the basics.
You will need to bring:
- some fabric (cotton works best, but anything will do! old clothing or scraps of fabric are fine)
- needle and thread
- some scissors (fabric or sewing scissors if you have them; we will have some scissors you can use if you don’t have these)
Of course if you’re an old hand, feel free to bring along your current quilting project. Or you can help us work on the BBWI quilt.
We will meet at EV, near Southwark Tube, in the deli.
The Arches, 97-99 Isabella Street, London, SE1 8DA
We’ll be there from 7pm.
Hope to see you there!
