This month we welcomed the wonderful South London Choir With No Name to our meeting! The choir is run for homeless people and others on the edges of society and meets every week to sing and share a communal meal. And that’s where Borough Belles come in; each month we bake and deliver cake to the choir to help celebrate birthdays. The cake fairies (as we’re known) have been dropping in to deliver cakes for the past couple of years, and this month we swapped, with the choir coming to visit us!
We started off with a vocal warm up, led by choir master Sam and accompanied on keyboard by Richard. Our first task was to sing the William Tell overture with an aptly chosen cake theme (cue a room full of WI-ers singing lemon drizzle and chocolate sponge over and over). We then moved on to breathing, yawning, jumping and shaking!
Now we were suitably warmed up it was time to attempt an actual song. Sam had chosen ‘With a little help from my friends’ (Joe Cocker version; this is what we were aiming for – SEE BELOW)
Sam separated the men and split the women into altos and sopranos and then we were ready to learn our first line!
We managed ‘What would you do if I sang out of tune’ and even garnered a ‘Wow’ from our (very appreciative and, some might say, easily pleased) audience. After a few more practices we were beginning to sound in shape and so it was the turn of the men. They managed it on the first try, although they have already had a few rehearsals in preparation for their upcoming concert on June 17th (tickets available!). Once we’d put it all together we had the first part nailed! On to the rest of the song…
One hour later and we were ready to perform! With the help of soloists Blue, Brian and Glen, we proudly present the CWNN and BBWI one time only performance of ‘With a little help from my friends’

As a reward for our good work, we were treated to two songs by the choir. They carried on the Beatles theme with ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, great singing and an awesome air guitar performance choir master Sam! And then a fabulous finale of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’, with the Belles joining in (enthusiastically, if not quite as expertly as the choir) for the last chorus.
After all that singing, it was definitely time for refreshments. Thanks to all the Belles who brought nibbles, especially these home baked goodies…
Thanks CWNN, it was great having you!
