With our President off on her summer holidays, we decided to follow in her footsteps (well, figuratively anyway) and held a wonderful, summer holiday themed meeting. Everyone was invited to don their best summer outfits (cue an array of fabulous sun hats and stylish sunglasses) and celebrate the sunshine.
This month, we welcomed Sam from Traveleyes as our speaker.
Traveleyes is a fantastic organisation which arranges holidays for mixed groups of visually impaired and sighted travellers. The company runs holidays across the globe, covering the UK, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas and offers everything from relaxing beach breaks to mountain trekking, safaris to skiing!
Sam explained that Traveleyes founder, Amar Latif, was inspired to start the company because he found it difficult to arrange exciting and independent travel as a blind person through regular holiday companies. Traveleyes provides passengers who have a visual impairment the same choices in destinations and activities as sighted travellers.
On the holiday, groups are evenly mixed between VIPs (visually impaired travellers) and sighted travellers. The activities are designed to be multi-sensory, enhancing the experience for everyone. Sam gave us a few examples such as skydiving and playing with lions!
What makes the holidays extra special is that each day, sighted people are partnered with a different VIP and throughout the activities they guide and describe the sights. In Sam’s experience, this makes the experience better for everyone, bringing the surroundings to life, making sighted travellers really look at their environment and creating memories that last longer.
Sighted travellers receive a 50% discount in return for guiding and describing the sights. No experience is required though, as Traveleyes give you all the training when you arrive. Describing the sights is a great way to socialise and according to their travellers, it doesn’t take long to get in the swing of things so you soon forget you’re even doing it!
Apparently, Traveleyes is a popular holiday company among other WI ladies and Sam’s inspiring and funny talk definitely got some of the Borough Belles excited about the possibility of exploring new places in a new way. Thanks Sam, for coming to visit us and we look forward to hearing holiday reports from our members who sign up!
We also have a special message from Sam…
|I would like to say a huge thank you for the warm reception I received at the WI meeting yesterday. It was a pleasure to meet you all, and I hope that the Traveleyes team will get to meet many of you on future Traveleyes holidays.Just to remind you all, the £100 Traveleyes vouchers can be used on any holiday of your choice, but you would need to book before the 31st December. If you didn’t receive a voucher and would like one, please feel free to call the office on 0113 887 4275 and ask for Sam.
For those of you who took brochures, please be aware that we are constantly adding to our list of holidays and therefore the brochures can quickly go out of date. You can view a full list of holidays available from Traveleyes here.
Finally, you may be interested to know that in addition to our standard 50% discount for sighted travellers, we sometimes have last minute offers and Early Bird deals, which can save you even more money. To find out about these offers, new holiday releases and Traveleyes news, please sign up to our e-newsletter.
I hope to see on a Traveleyes holiday soon. Feel free to help us spread the word and share the adventure!
Following the talk, it was time for a glass or two of something special. We got into the holiday spirit (quite literally) as people had bought an array of exotic bottles from the back of the drinks cabinet, and we were ready to make cocktails…
Although, obviously, there was plenty of tea available too…
And thanks to all our lovely members and guests who brought along the feast for the evening.
We finished off the meeting by announcing the winners of our best summer outfit competition. Congratulations Julia and Leona!
