Thumbs were pricked, card was ripped and wool got tangled, as July’s meeting saw the Belles giving it all we’d got, making things to sell on our stall at the Bermondsey Street Festival in September. As our main fundraising event of the year – and a key local festival – it’s one of the biggest events in our calendar, so it was all hands on deck with scissors, needles and glue sticks.
We had three tables on the go during the meeting…
The sewing table – where our Craft Officer Ruth used our donated fabric stash to demonstrate how to cut and sew froggy beanies (to be stuffed later!), and embroider the Belles emblem, the bee, onto fabric. Meanwhile, Emily led the bunting making team in cutting triangles of fabric to sew together.
The pompom table – where Catherine and Ellie helped Belles transform leftover wool stashes into pompoms, which will be strung together to make garlands. Catherine demonstrated the ‘fork method’ (with varying levels of success…), Andrea remembered the ‘pencil method’ from her childhood (much more successful!) and Ellie cut out card discs to use for reliable traditional method. Ruth also brought in her pro pompom maker, to create the daddy of all pompoms!
The recipe card table – where Johanna showed Belles how to cut and paste together stylish recipe cards, using a selection of images and recipes. Originally conceived by our own Belle Emma for our members packs, these lovely cards will be sold in sets at the fair.
|If you fancy having a go at home, or want to make more crafts to donate to our stall, you can find instructions on making fabric frogs, and making your own pompom garland on our Borough Belles Pinterest page.
We will also need volunteer bakers to whip up treats for the day, so if you can bake for the Belles festival stall, get in touch via our Facebook page, email us, or speak to us at next month’s meeting!

Borough Market prize draw
We also had an exciting prize draw to finish off our Craftathon meeting. Our friends at Borough Market kindly donated a bag of goodies for us to raffle off to members, including oven gloves, an apron and a tea towel.
Winner of the previous meeting’s costume prize Leona, drew out the winning ticket… which belonged to our Social Media Officer Johanna! And here she is modelling all the lovely goodies!
