December meeting: Solstice Singing

In December we were very happy to welcome choir leader Katie Rose to lead us in a musical session of songs in harmony.

We know that science says singing in a group lifts the spirits, supports lung health, encourages mindfulness, and builds friendships – though many of us had never tried it or were shy we wouldn’t be able to follow, but Katie showed us there was nothing to fear. We started off with a warmup of voices and muscles including some particularly Belles-friendly bee-style buzzing! And then straight in to three songs in three-part harmony, all on a wintry theme.

First we learned a Sámi yoik – handy for the next time we need to call a reindeer! Then a wassail and a modern song ‘May Your Cup Always Be Full’ followed, all proving the magic of a good sing.

One Belle said “Last night was such a surprise – I’m still taken aback how speedily we got to sing three part canons”

We also enjoyed mulled wine, festive spiced teas and mince pies!

In the words of the alto part of ‘May Your Cup Always Be Full’:

We wish you joy – We wish you health – We wish you love – We wish you peace

And see you in the new year!
